President’s Message

March 21, 2010

It is with great pride and honor that I follow Judge Peter M. Weinstein as President of the B’nai B’rith Justice Unit #5207 in its 30th year.

Many of those outside of the BBJU family view our Unit as the de facto Broward County Jewish Bar Association. To the extent that our Unit comprises Jewish judges and attorneys, we are. But, we are so much more. BBJU is part of B’nai B’rith International, an organization which has existed for almost 165 years, operates in 50 countries, and has over 200,000 members. BBI has been deeply involved with international issues and has a permanent representative at the United Nations. Its presidents have shared audiences with leaders of other countries, United Nations representatives, and even the Pope.

BBI’s mission includes assisting both Jewish and non-Jewish people around the globe. For example, within 24 hours of the earthquake in Haiti, BBI helped organize the transport of medical personnel and relief supplies into Haiti. BBI also operates 4000 senior housing units throughout the United States. These units are open to the elderly regardless of religious affiliation. Please visit www.bnaibrith.org to learn more about what this incredible organization has achieved in its 165 year history.

Where does BBJU fit into BBI’s structure? BBI consists of regions, which are further divided into lodges and justice units. Membership in justice units is limited to judges and attorneys. Our BBJU was founded in 1981. We continue to have a strong Executive Board and Board of Directors. The deep commitment of our membership can be seen by the number of past presidents who still serve as officers and board members.

While BBJU provides enjoyable social and professional events, including happy hours, a brown bag lunch series with judges, events including topical speakers and authors, and trips to Florida Marlins and Florida Panthers’ games, our true mission is Tikkun Olam ("Repairing the World"). Our Unit has assisted the children of JAFCO, collected canned food for the hungry, offered pro bono legal services, sent Purim packages to our troops, and assisted at the Hatikvah House. With the generous assistance of supporters like you, we will continue to pursue this mission.

I look forward to working with the Officers and Board of Directors towards another successful year. In closing, I would like to express my gratitude to Michael Fischler, Holly Krulik, Michael Leader, Ari Porth, Carol Trefry, and Beverly Vesel. Without their assistance, this Installation would not have been possible.

Regards,

Richard A. Sachs
